He began playing professional hockey for the Russian ice hockey team Khimik Voskresensk in 1990, and the Toronto Maple Leafs selected him in the 10th round of the 1994 NHL Entry Draft.
His most productive season was in 1998-99, when he scored 37 goals and added 22 assists for a career-high 59 points. He wasn’t perfect defensively, but he was quick and excellent in the offensive zone.
Later, the Toronto Maple Leafs traded him to the Phoenix Coyotes, followed by the Montreal Canadiens, Chicago Blackhawks, and Washington Capitals.
The left winger retired from the NHL in 2003 and finished his career with 502 games, registering 286 points.
After leaving the NHL, he returned to Russia for one more season with CSKA Moscow before retiring.

The Russian professional ice hockey player had a small family, including his wife, Lyudmila Ustakova, and son, Daniil Berezin.
He often shared pictures of his family and son’s achievements on social media, including Instagram and X.
Daniil Berezin is a junior tennis player who trains under Rick Macci and Jason Zafiros. Sergei also trained and managed his athleticism.
He helped his son play with various athletes, including Beijing Olympic Champion Elena Dementieva and Finnish ice hockey center Aleksander Barkov.
Sergei happily lived with his family in Florida following his retirement from hockey.
