During the MSNBC interview with Donald Trump, Ramin realized Trump had memory-related issues.

  • Setoodeh’s parents migrated to the U.S. from Iran before the Iranian hostage crisis.
  • Although Setoodeh’s father wanted Ramin to change his name, he decided not to.

Variety’s co-editor-in-chief, Ramin, is an exceptional visionary who is indulged in journalism and writing.

He is the author of the New York Times Best-Selling book Ladies Who Punch: The Explosive Inside Story of The View, launched in 2019, and has written over 50 cover stories for Variety.

Recently, he launched his new book, Apprentice in Wonderland: How Donald Trump and Mark Burnett Took America Through the Looking Glass, on June 18, 2024.

Ramin Setoodeh’s Parents Come From An Iranian Heritage

Ramin often shares the moments with his parents through his writing; however, he has never once revealed their names.

His parents relocated to the U.S. as college students just before the Iranian hostage crisis, and they had to experience a greater level of prejudice.

This indicates that his parents spent their early lives in Iran. However, Ramin was born and raised in the U.S., following Iranian culture and beliefs.

In an article published in Stanford magazine, Ramin Setoodeh discusses how his name was difficult for his grad school teachers to pronounce, which made him question his Iranian heritage.

Although his name signified his heritage, his father wanted Ramin to change it to a normal American name before he went to college.

However, as we all know, he didn’t change his name and embraced his history and culture.

Moreover, the negotiation between the U.S. and Iran collapsed when his mother was in college.

She was terrified of the social discrimination surrounding an Iranian immigrant and, hence, lied about her origin.

Thus, Ramin’s parents lived a fearful life as early immigrants and tried their best to provide a safer upbringing for Ramin.

However, they were initially naive, unaware of the principles of blending in and preventing social stigma as immigrants.

As they gradually adjusted to the American culture, they honed the techniques of crafting integration, preventing the family from being victimized.

By the time Ramin’s sister was born, they had mastered the art and gave his sister a completely normal American name, Sophia.

Thus, Ramin accepted his heritage and his parents’ innocence, which were associated with their history.
