His parents came from Hermosillo, Sonora, in Mexico, and he grew up in a Section 8 housing project in San Pedro, California.
His father enlisted him at the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy, where he learned Brazilian jiu-jitsu at age 13. He trained under head coach Rener Gracie, and he nicknamed him “T-City” from his use of triangle choke.
Brian became a professional MMA fighter in 2010 and won his first pro-MMA championship against Carlos Garces via unanimous decision in a five-round bout.
Later, he debuted in the UFC in 2014 and ranked number 3 in the UFC featherweight rankings as of February 2024.
