MY TRUE LOVE STORY - By Brenda Whitlock

As a young girl I witnessed many of my friends and family members get married, only to end up going through divorce. I promised myself that I would not allow that to happen to me. I was determined to wait on the Lord to send me that special someone to spend the rest of my life with. I had no idea what God had in store.

The year was 1965 when my knight in shining armor walked into my life. We both knew immediately that God, in His infinite wisdom, had certainly brought us together. Not only would He give us a life filled with love, but also respect, honor, tenderness, joy, and much happiness that would last for 45 blessed years!!

We met at church. That’s significant. You see, we both loved God and determined that He would always be the cornerstone of our lives, as long as we were together. We made sure He was the center of everything, both in our home, and also, in every decision that we made.

The man I loved with my whole heart was the most selfless, kind, considerate, hardworking, thoughtful, strong, yet, the most tender person, I had ever known. I was very young when we married. He was the greatest example of what a man…a husband and provider…was supposed to be. Most of all, the life he lived, each and every day before me, our family, and all those who were blessed to know him, was a true Christian example!! All of these special loving traits made a lasting impression on this young bride.

We were blessed to be able to travel many places, both in and out of the country, but our happiest times were spent on the beautiful farm that God had allowed us to be caretakers of. It was in this place that we felt the nearness and closeness of God, His creation, and each other! We were blessed to have one son, Wade, who would later marry and give us two beautiful grands, Austin Wade, and Sydney DeAnn! They would bring more joy, and happiness than we could ever imagine!

As a business man my husband was known, and respected, by so many, not only for his impeccable knowledge but also for his exemplary Christian life. Our life together was as close to being perfect as we could ever have dreamed it to be.

Then, in 2005, I began to notice changes. I had no idea the long road we were about to go down would change our lives forever! First, we faced colon cancer, which involved three surgeries over the next five years. This took a toll on him, and certainly caused much worry and stress for the both of us, but cancer would not win. God brought us through that, and we were so very grateful.

It was some four years later that our greatest test would come. It was just little things at the beginning, and then they became more frequent, and obvious. I had my suspicions, but knowing so little about what I feared, I allowed myself to go into denial. However, each day became worse, and I realized we had to get a diagnosis…and soon.

I made an appointment for him to see the doctor. It was on that day that everything in our life changed. After a very short exam, the doctor’s words were direct, clear, and precisely to the point. She looked across the room without hesitation and said, “Mrs. Whitlock, it’s Dementia.” I wanted to turn and run out of the room and never look back!! It was devastating!! My sweet, loving, kind, handsome, caring husband, my protector, was now going to have to depend on me to be HIS protector. Yes, I would step up to the task, and give him all my love and support, with all the strength I had in my body to give!! He was my love!! My life!!

Over the next days, weeks, and months, he would leave me a little more, and there was nothing I could do to stop it. He lived three years after his diagnosis. On the first day of spring, March 20, 2012, at 3:07 pm, as I laid beside him, he peacefully slipped away from me. The love of my life, my knight in shining armor, my soulmate, my protector, provider, my sweetheart, my gift from God was now a resident of the place where he had longed to be!!

I am so very grateful to God for this precious gift he placed in my life. He allowed me the honored privilege to be his wife for 45 wonderful and happy years!! There are so many more beautiful things I could share, but due to space and time, I will close. Hopefully, I have given a glimpse of the true love story I experienced in my marriage with the man of my dreams.

Thank you my heavenly Father for my beloved husband, Sidney Hugh Whitlock.

Your loving wife,
Brenda Whitlock
