I was reading in Genesis 28 recently where Jacob stole his brother’s blessing, deceiving his father, Isaac, about his true identity. Esau’s identity was stolen, the father was devastated, yet the mother, Rebecca, was the mastermind behind it all. Esau was extremely angry and plotted revenge against his brother. Upon hearing this, Rebecca insisted that Jacob, her favorite son, return to her home country in search of a proper wife. She also knew he would be safe there from his brother’s wrath.
I found it interesting that the father blessed his son, Jacob, a second time even after the lies about his identity. Isaac still loved his son despite the lies he told. He still wanted the best for his son, so he spoke the blessings of Abraham over him and sent him away to secure his future.
Jacob was traveling alone in search of an unknown destiny. As nightfall came, Jacob found a place to sleep, making a rock his pillow. While asleep he had a dream. He saw a stairway leading into the sky where angels of God were going up and down. Next, he saw God, and God spoke to him, “I am the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac your father. I am giving you and your descendants the ground where you are sleeping. Your descendants will be as many as the dust of the earth. All families of the earth will be blessed by you. I’ll stay with you, protect you, and bring you back to this land I have promised you.” Immediately he woke up and knew God was in this place. This experience with God reassured him of his uncertain future.
Now, let’s just think about this for a minute. Jacob was a swindler, a liar and a deceiver, yet, God overlooked his faults and saw something greater inside of him. God saw his potential to accomplish the promise of Abraham and spoke to him in a dream regarding his destiny. He had a life-changing experience and he would never be the same again.
God has a good plan for each of us, a life changing encounter with Him because His love for us is greater than our shortcomings. No matter how you feel you may have failed God, yourself or others, don't let the enemy steal your God-given destiny. Remember Jacob’s story and secure your future. Jacob found his true identity in the Lord that night, and we too, find our true identity when we encounter Christ. We find our purpose as we purpose to know Him. Now that’s a pocket full of sunshine.
